Seeing the food swamp for the weeds: Moving beyond food retail mix in evaluating young people’s food environments

Food swaps are areas that have high numbers of unhealthy food retailer options that overwhelm and outnumber healthy options. These environments have important implications for the health of young Canadians and the impact can be experienced differently depending on socioeconomic status.

School of Public Health PhD Candidate Jennifer Ann Brown, has recently published a new article with Dr. Candace Nykiforuk that looks at the food environments that surround young people in two Canadian cities. Their research seeks to identify a new way to evaluate these food environments. They also examine the occurrence of unhealthy food retailers in young people’s activity settings and quantify repeated exposure.
